Plagiarism

This is something often talked about but , what about it ? I have taken something from a web site which, I think explains what we need to know quite clearly and simply.

So, with reference to :-

http://www.ask.com/bar?q=references+pliagarism&page=1&qsrc=121&ab=0&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uwplatt.edu%2Flibrary%2Freference%2Fplagiarism.html

I reproduce some highlights but would advise readers to visit the link for details.

"Plagiarism Defined

Plagiarism is stealing or using the writing or ideas of others as though they are one's own. The word comes from Latin, plagium which means "kidnapping".

According to West's Encyclopedia of American Law, plagiarism is "the act of appropriating the literary composition of another author, or excerpts, ideas, or passages therefrom, and passing the material off as one's own creation. Plagiarism is theft of another person's writing or ideas."

"

For interest sake lets look at another site,

http://www.ask.com/bar?q=references+pliagarism&page=1&qsrc=121&ab=8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bristol.ac.uk%2Fis%2Flibrary%2Ffindinginformation%2Fplagiarism%2Fadvice.html

"What is plagiarism?

The University's Examination Regulations define plagiarism in the following way:

'Plagiarism is the unacknowledged inclusion in a student’s work of material derived from the published or unpublished work of another. This constitutes plagiarism whether it is intentional or unintentional. “Work” includes internet sources as well as printed material. Examples include:

-Quoting another’s work “word for word” without placing the phrase(s), sentence(s) or paragraph(s) in quotation marks and providing a reference for the source.

--Using statistics, tables, figures, formulae, data, diagrams, questionnaires, images, musical notation, computer code, etc., created by others without acknowledging and referencing the original source. This list is not intended to be exhaustive.

-Summarising, or paraphrasing the work or ideas of another without acknowledging and referencing the original source. “Paraphrasing” means re-stating another author’s ideas, meaning or information in a student’s own words.

-Copying the work of another student, with or without that student’s agreement.

-Collaborating with another student, even where the initial collaboration is legitimate, e.g., joint project work, and then presenting the resulting work as one’s own. If students are unclear about the extent of collaboration which is permitted in joint work they should consult the relevant tutor.

-Submitting, in whole or in part, work which has previously been submitted at the University of Bristol or elsewhere, without fully referencing the earlier work. This includes unacknowledged re-use of the student’s own submitted work.

-Buying or commissioning an essay or other piece of work and presenting it as a student’s own.' "

Although the context seems to be on students' environment only, I believe this extends to other areas outside the academic institutions . Of course there are other sites available. But my message here is that we should , at least , be aware of prevailing good practice.

Anyway, this is just something that happened to cross my mind this morning.

Windmills of Your mind

Weekends are times for me to rewind all those songs that I listened to -- and still do. This is another. Go through the lyrics and see if you don't end up with a spinning mind ! Maybe I should this for one of our lessons...

From Wilkipedia :-

'The song illustrates a person's mental state after a romantic break-up, relating the way emotionally charged thoughts and memories can run in tortured circles. With its succession of similes ("Like a circle in a spiral/Like a wheel within a wheel"), hypnotic rhythms and complex imagery, it is a song that can "stick in your head."'

Its also the sound track of the movie The Thomas Crown Affair and sung by Sting. Of course there  are   many other singers' version as well.

Windmills of Your mind

Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnaval balloon
Like a carousell that's turning
Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream.

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that I said
Lovers walking allong the shore,
Leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And a fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

( sorry --this must be one of the longest lyrics ever )

Heck ! where's my DVD ??

I was looking for my original DVD on Eric Clapton's "Live at Madison Square Garden,New York" -- but couldn't find it ! You see this song has sort of been playing in my head last hour or so . Anyway thank God for Internet (I was without it last week-end) , I found it and thought of putting it here....

So--here's to me !

So--here's to me !

I know you've been waiting for this !

Well--here it is.  We used four lanes - but obviously all us , except for suresh, were not playing our normal game.  I believe even he was shocked with his score of 155 in the third game. My highest was 146. Of course if we take the average of three games -- as it should (heheheheh) --I'm still king !

That day , I had , for the first time (definitely not the last ) , new crowd from class 25 and of course Malik, our Woods photographer, was also around. Again--even he wasn't playing his normal game.

Class 23-25, my ever loyalists, were present and I think there were a few surprising discoveries !! Will confirm it in the next session !

Anyway--jony had problem with his memory (I mean his phone's), and I had problem with my picture-taking, as only a few are worth showing---and here they are.

THE SOUND OF SILENCE !

HERE IS MY WEEKEND  SONG ...
'THE SOUND OF SILENCE'!
NOTE THE LYRICS  AND I LEAVE IT TO YOU TO INTERPRETE IT....!
THE SOUND OF SILENCE
Hello darkness, my old friend,
Ive come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing
without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools said i, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, the words of the prophets

Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisperd in the sounds of silence.

Looks like I Have To Reveal !

I suspect some of the members here ahs the wrong notion of the whole thing. So to avoid further confusion, here is the event in chronological order. This posting is brought about by a comment by sicko and I felt he deserves further clarification.

This fracas all started when I read the posting by faez_faezlyn .

But don't bother to look for her posting because it mystreriously disappeared from her blog for/by reason best known by her nor will I coax her for an answer because as it is , I have my sympathy for her and can imagine what she must be going through !

She was writing on her frustration during her presentation when somebody kept interrupting her to the point when she lost her train of thoughts. Thats a fair posting to me and I commented on it. I wrote :

sunnysideup said....
You know , you are the Captain in your presentation ! You could have told that person to 'shut up' in a nice way by saying thta he/she WILL be given a chance to talk later, but for noe , tell the person to let you finish your presentation. If this doesnt work, then wait for that person's turn to present.......
May 14, 2009 8:42 AM

However , the person meant by faez-fazlyn in her posting wasn't happy and wrote this in his blog ,
http://alittlepersonknownasteacher.blogspot.com/2009/05/worst-day-ever-for-me-as-teacher.html

So sicko who commented in my posting , I so do not agree with your comment , as the 'spirit' and 'element' of 'fun' , 'innocence' and 'spirit' that you are saying in the blog in questione are certainly not and never present at his posting --- at all !

What has my posting to fazlyn's posting got to do with his 'problem' with her ! Why implicate me at all. And it became more provocative through this omission of my nick and my photo ! Well, I am only practicing my right to express my feeling.

First I wondered perhaps I should consult that person first, but then, I wasn't given that benefit by him too.

Anyway sicko, whatever you have written, thats your opinion and though I disagree with it, I will never hold you against it. I believe in the freedom of expression and you were not abusive. Nor will I write a posting of how good I am , what I have done and so on just to prove a point. Most of all, I will never intimidate you.

You're still good with me --- and keep posting and commenting my friend - and I mean it.

ADDENDUM TO " I STRONGLY PROTEST"

The fact is, even then , the  posting  reeks of misinformation and disinformation.  There were two separate issues, and I was involved in the second one when a class of CCSS students approached me and my collegue regarding some problem about a subject.

As far as I know , the representative or members of that class has never been impolite to anyone. In fact he had to suffer snide remarks and certainly there has been misrepresentation and more importantly, omission of facts. with regards to their issues.

Or is this an attempt on sacarsm? But the posting is everything but that .

I have my problems with students too. I write about them too. But I make sure I do not misinform or disinform.

I gave an A+ to the person I had an arguement with in a class , simply because I do not get emotional . If he deserves an 'A" he deserves it . Whatever happened between us has got nothing to do with his academic ability. Nor will I give or even hint of any repercussion after a disagreement  or get emotional for that matter !

Its sad !! And because of all this , I got dragged into it. If I am a "good person", why use my comments ? Why remove my identity ? Why put that logo with that offensive word ( to me anyway, in that repect that it was used ) ? Why ? Why ?

I have actually prepared a longer posting on this matter with direct reference to the subject of his posting, but I refrained from posting it after discussing it with a collegue.

You may ask me why do this one then ? Its my prerogative to do so as my comments and alteration to my identity had been done without so much as informing me or discussing with me in the first place .

I repeat. Its really sad !
