AFP/File – Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, play together as they stay at Chiang Mai Zoo in northern Thailand in 2005. …
Lin Hui is the mother of the twins !
AP – In this photo released by Chiang Mai Zoo, a new born baby panda sits in the hands of a veterinarian .
Great news for animal lovers. I heard it over the astro news this evening , and searching the web, I found the actual news.
Chiang Mai Zoo have reported that a panda in their zoo has given birth to a twin . Apparently, the zoo authority artificially inseminated the female panda in February , but there was no sign at all that she was pregnant. Read more here.
According to AFP report here .
"Giant pandas, notorious for their low sex drive, are among the world's most endangered animals. Nearly 1,600 pandas are believed to survive in the wild in China and about 180 are being raised in captivity in zoos worldwide."
You may ask me why the interest ! I have always been interested on this species which at one time was facing extinction.
The pandas have many pecularities. Let me highlight certain points taken from here.
--The panda first appeared 2 to 3 million years ago.
--Today, pandas are found in six isolated forest areas in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces in China.
--Pandas live in high , usually from 2,700 to 3,700 meters above sea level
--For years, scientists have argued about whether the panda is more closely related to the bear or the raccoon
--some characteristics common to bears, but other characteristics are not
--Recent DNA / serological studies have determined that the panda is more closely related to bears than to raccoons.
--adult panda is typically 1.5 meters long and weighs about 75 to 135 kilograms Males are 10% to 20% heavier than female
--Pandas are most active at twilight and night and slow in the day
--Their fur is slightly oily which prevents water penetration in the cool, damp climate where the pandas live.
--Pandas now feed almost exclusively on the stems and leaves of bamboo. Although, ninety-five to ninety-nine percent of the pandas' diet is bamboo, they also eat flowers, vines, mushroom, grass, fish, and small rodents.
--Pandas also communicate vocally. They have up to 11 distinct calls
--Pandas breed once a year. Mating season is from March to May
--Pandas are the second most threatened species in the world. Only about 1000 pandas are estimated to live in the wild.
--Destruction of the panda's natural habitat is now the major threat to their existance
So far, The United States, Japan and Thailand are the only countries outside China to have bred pandas through artificial insemination.
Now , tell me these are not interesting!
above - on the way to CM
Other than seeing some of my students mourning the loss suffered by their dream team ( guess it left them dreaming of what could have been ..), what else happened today !
With a group of students, we went to Central Market . No, we didn't go there as tourists, we went there with a mission. Nothing grand or 'mission-impossible' type of activities!
No, we went there to a place (recommended by a CBDS student actually) to customize a t-shirt design. Nithing special--its just that we seem to get many custom-designed t-shirts that we thought , why not one ourselves just for laughs.
Anyway, we arrived at the shop in Central Market but the person was not in. A quick call to the one who recommended us and we were told that he would be back in 10 minutes.
So we decided to have our lunch at the food court. Now just a few years ago, I was attached to Cosmo Bangkok Bank which is just round the corner - and I just about took my lunch every other day at this food court.
Since then, I have no reeason to come here and I was shocked with the change. Its such a pleasant place now . The air-con is effective and comfortable and the stalls are better and with more and better varieties.
We each ordered at separate stalls. I went to a 'nasi kandar'stall - one of the cleanest I've ever seen in KL. I picked, a plate of plain rice, three pieces of tandoorie chicken, salad of cucumber, chilli and pineapples and curry. The cost ? A mere RM 2 !!!! Can you believe that ?? In KL ?
Anyway we were soon back at the shop and discussing t-shirts, colours, collared or round-necked , designs, re-design, colours, wordings and costs. The man in charged is a pleasant guy and he impressed me with his Adobe skills in re-creating our deign.
So, out of curiousity, I asked him if he was a business man first or a computer guy first. His answer shocked us further. He said he has been in this business for 8 years and only studied to use Adobe a month ago because he had to pay RM 25 for this service before and thought he could save cost by doing it himself.
Hey bro Halim --I take off my hat to you !
Anway, we soon finished our business and went on our way home. So for some hours, I stopped looking at blogs !
Annuar's partner in crime--baby shah (above 2 photos)
...and gang ..and 'the godfather'
Annuar--after being mutilated !
helas - the famous digi-man
annuar ( with green cap) and gang
Today I had two pleasant surprises. The first? I’ve already posted it a few postings away in which I met helas in (of all the places) Wisma Sime Darby.
My second surprise happened in the office, and it comes in the shape of one of my many ex favourite students – Annuar !
Now, like many others, he always has a ready smile whenever we met! Call him jovial, happy –he is all positive rolled into one ---to me anyway.
Its funny that just for today, I met two ex students, doing their OJT at two separate places BUT, staying in the same unit ! THAT is a co-incident.
Anyway, back to Annuar. I remember his ‘partner-in-crime’ –Baby Shah -we call him. He is anything but a baby size – more like a junior Sumo wrestler. Each of them has his own peculiar sense of humour. They are fun, reliable and easily likeable.
This characteristics of theirs really showed up at the first camp, The Rock Camp.
I reproduce photos of them and the ‘digi-man’ helas ! They were fun.
In fact, he expressed genuine regret on missing the last camp. Incidentally, the Woods Camp was discovered by him when he was surveying for me new camp-sites after the Rock Camp.
Unfortunately for him (but fortunate for those who went to the Woods Camp) , the plan was delayed and he had to miss it.
As it is, helas (bless him) is one of my ex-students who is still actively keeping in touch with me. There are others also, through YM and so on who are still maintaining an open channel with me.
Anyway, it was good to see you Annuar and even better on knowing that he is now settled in a soon-to-be permanent job. Yes, we’ll make it a point to make that trip a reality!
